A High School Known for Violence with Machetes Becomes Peaceful By Learning the Sword of the Spirit
“…and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. Ephesians 6:17
Watch the 2.5-minute video below where CIDM’s Teaching Director, Brisso Jean Doriscan, discusses the impact of teaching the Bible at a high school with a history of violence and its effects on students and the school’s reputation.
The students have studied and learned God’s Word. It is simply the Bible that has brought transformation within the school community, which is evident not only in individual lives but also in the collective spirit that now permeates the hallways. Hundreds of students have discovered a new sense of purpose, kindness, love and hope through Jesus Christ. The CIDM Bible classes have become a safe haven—a place where questions are welcomed, struggles are shared openly, and victories are celebrated together.
Our CIDM teachers, through their dedication and faith at all twenty schools they teach at, have modeled what it means to lead with compassion and integrity. Their influence and God’s word extend beyond academic lessons, touching the students’ daily interactions and shaping their values. As a result, the atmosphere at this high school has shifted: conflicts have diminished, friendships have deepened, and there is a genuine desire among students to support one another. God’s word has changed lives. Thank you for being a partner with us, helping these changes occur.

The above photo is the high school in Jacmel, Haiti, once dangerously violent filled with angry students. Now the school receives an A+ for peace, achievement and classroom prayer. All glory to God!

CIDM gives the students three Bible exams per year, reviewing what’s been taught and to evaluate what they’ve learned factually and practically in the Bible class. Here’s a sampling of the exam questions and answers:
What are the 3 types of man?
Answer: There are: The natural man, the Carnal man and the spiritual man.
What is the meaning of sanctification?
Answer: Sanctification means set a part.
In what part in your life have you seen growth?
Answer: I have grown in so many ways this school year. However, the most significant change is being able to forgive my dad. A few years ago, he was drunk and laid hands on my mom. Since then, I struggled with a lot of anger and unforgiveness towards my dad. Even when he was sober and asked my mom and family for forgiveness, it was very hard for me and I could not really forgive him. But this year in my Bible class at school, I surrendered my life to Christ and God gave me the strength to forgive my dad.
What’s the most significant thing you’ve learned this year in the Bible class?
Answer: First of all, I want to say that this study is not a simple study. It’s a mental, psychological and spiritual therapy that’s helps us to know ourselves and develop a better relationship with God. I thank my teacher for being patient with me and the class.
This year I have learned that I am wonderfully and beautiful made, and I have a heavenly Father who loves me.
I used to be overly concerned about what other people thought of me, and I lacked confidence, making it easy for others to mistreat me; however, this is no longer the case. As I’ve studied and learned this year in my Bible class, God’s given me confidence in who I am in Him and how He views me with love, respect and kindness. I trust in Him, and I know that I am loved by God, and I will never be alone!!
